Female suicide bomber attack leaving Nine dead in DI Khan

Dera Ismail Khan    –   At least nine people, including six police personnel, were martyred and around 30 others injured in two connected terror strikes on Sunday near Dera Ismail Khan city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The first attack was carried out at a roadside checkpoint near Kotla Syedan village in the outskirts of the town wherein four bike-riding militants opened fire on two on-duty policemen, Constable Jahangir and Constable Inam, killing them on the spot.

When the bodies of the slain policemen were brought to the district hospital, a burqa-clad woman suicide bomber, already sitting there, targeted the people who gathered around the ambulance outside the trauma centre of the hospital.

Seven people, four of them policemen and three civilians, were martyred and around 30 injured in this subsequent suicide blast. The seriously injured people were shifted to the Combine Military Hospital.

Banned militant outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the “revenge” attacks.

The woman bomber, aged around 28 years, came on foot and blew herself up,” said district police chief Saleem Riaz. He said that 7 to 8kg explosive material was used in the bomb.

The officer feared rise in the death toll as a number of the wounded were in critical condition. He said that the policemen deputed at the entry of the hospital carry out searching and frisking of the visiting men but females are exempted from body search due to the tradition and customs of the area.

Officials said the suicide bombing by a female extremist was first ever and an unexpected incident in the region.

TTP Spokesperson Muhammad Khurasani in a statement claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying these were carried out as retribution for the killing of two Taliban commanders by counter terrorism police around a month ago. But he denied the suicide bomber was a woman.

But another policeman insisted the suicide bomber was a woman. He said the mutilated head of the bomber was recovered and sent along with pieces of her hairs and feet for forensic examination.

Officials at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) said five dead bodies and at least 30 injured people have been brought to the medical facility.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is on an official visit to the US, strongly condemned the terrorist attacks, and expressed grief over loss of lives.

Hafiz Saeed arrested in terrorism financing case

Authorities on Wednesday arrested outlawed Jamaat ud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed on terror finance charges, a spokesman for the Punjab chief minister said.

Shahbaz Gill said Hafiz Saeed was arrested near the town of Gujranwala. “The main charge is that he is gathering funds for banned outfits, which is illegal,” he said.

The Punjab Counter Terrorism Department said in a statement that Hafiz Saeed had been arrested while going to a court in Gujranwala to seek pre-arrest bail but was remanded in custody. A CTD official said Hafiz Saeed had been presented in an anti-terrorism court and later sent to prison. He added that the charge sheet against him will be presented soon. The official further said that a case against Hafiz Saeed had been lodged under the anti-terrorism act. The CTD has been directed to complete its investigation and submit a charge sheet to the court in the stipulated time.

A JuD spokesperson also confirmed the arrest.

On July 3, the top 13 leaders of the banned JuD, including Hafiz Saeed and Naib Emir Abdul Rehman Makki, were booked in nearly two dozen cases for terror financing and money laundering under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997. The CTD, which registered the cases in five cities of Punjab, declared that the JuD was financing terrorism from the massive funds collected through non-profit organisations and trusts, including Al-Anfaal Trust, Dawatul Irshad Trust, Muaz Bin Jabal Trust, etc. These non-profit organisations were banned in April as the CTD during detailed investigations found that they had links with the JuD and its top leadership, accused of financing terrorism by building huge assets/properties from the collected funds in Pakistan.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday hailed the arrest of Hafiz Saeed. Trump, who didn’t name Saeed, said, “After a ten-year search, the so-called ‘mastermind’ of the Mumbai Terror attacks has been arrested in Pakistan. Great pressure has been exerted over the last two years to find him!”

NAB freezes assets of Shehbaz Sharif and his family

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Wednesday ordered to freeze assets of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif and his family members in a case pertaining to assets beyond known sources of income, a private TV channel reported.

In separate letters written to various departments including excise and taxation, revenue and district governments, the NAB has ordered that all moveable and immoveable assets belonging to Opposition Leader in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif and his family members should be frozen with immediate effect. The anti-graft watchdog has also banned sale, purchase and transfer of all properties belonging to former Punjab chief minister and his family members including Hamza Shehbaz, Sulaiman Shehbaz, Nusrat Shehbaz and Tehmina Durrani.

The letters have been sent to deputy commissioners (DCs) of Haripur and Model Town, and director generals of excise department, Defence Housing Authority (DHA), Lahore Development Authority (LDA), SECP, Judicial Housing Authority and JDA.

The frozen assets include three properties belonging to Tehmina Durrani in Hairpur’s Pir Sohawa tourist resort; two Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs owned by Shehbaz; two plots (87 and 96) in Model Town’s block-H owned by Nusrat Shehbaz; two plots belonging to Tehmina Durrani in DHA Lahore’s Phase-V; 14 properties belonging to Hamza and Sulaiman; Shehbaz family’s trading assets in Ramzan Sugar Mills, European-Asian Trading Co, Madina Trading, Sharif Feed Mills, Madina Construction Co, Sharif Poultry Farm, Sharif Dairy Farm, Ramzan Energy, Sharif Milk Products, Crystal Plastics, Chiniot Power, Ag Energy Consultants, Al-Arabia Sugar Mills and Unitas Power.

NAB on October 5, 2018, had arrested Shehbaz in connection with the Ashiana-e-Iqbal Housing Scheme case. However, it also initiated another inquiry against him for allegedly owning assets beyond known sources of income. During investigation into the case, the NAB arrested few suspects, including Shehbaz’s son, Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Hamza Shehbaz. Some suspects revealed that they had been doing the job for Sharif family. Later on, NAB arrested one Mushtaq Chini, who later became an approver against Shehbaz. NAB had also sent questionnaires to Shehbaz’s wives, daughters and other family members, seeking details about assets, businesses and properties. However, now NAB has decided to freeze the assets as Shehbaz and his family members could not satisfy the investigation team.

Kuwait to issue virtual telecom operator licence

DUBAI: Kuwait is to issue a virtual telecom operator licence, effectively creating a fourth player in a market serving roughly 4 million people.

Virtual network operators do not own the networks they use to provide communications services but instead lease capacity from conventional operators, usually paying them a percentage of their revenue as well as fees.

Kuwait’s Communications and Information Technology Regulatory Authority has issued a request for applications for the license, according to a document seen by Reuters.

State news agency KUNA also reported a licence would be granted.

Applications must be submitted by Nov. 14, 2019 and the selected application will be announced by Feb. 6, 2020, the document shows.

The applicant will have to partner with a company that can provide it with the technology, know-how and operational and management experience.

The partner will also own at least 40 percent of shares and have a five-year management agreement. Kuwait’s current telecom providers are Zain, Ooredoo, and Viva. Kuwait’s existing telecom providers, as well as anyone holding 25 percent or more shares in Kuwaiti telecom companies, are not allowed to apply.

Foreign ownership would be subject to Kuwaiti law, which restricts non-Kuwaitis to minority ownership.

1 coal miner rescued alive after 40 hours; 4 bodies recovered, 6 still trapped

Rescue workers on Tuesday managed to recover one coal miner, as well as the bodies of four others who had been trapped in a coal mine in Quetta district’s Degari area over 40 hours ago. Search for six other miners is still underway.

Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority Imran Khan Zarkoon confirmed that one miner was rescued alive while the bodies of four four others have been recovered in a search operation. He assured that the operation will continue until the six other miners are recovered.

Eleven miners were trapped in a mine on Sunday when poisonous gas accumulated in the mine that is thousands of feet deep. The Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Balochistan Shafqat Fayyaz, said that the authorities were “trying [their] level best” to recover the coal workers.

Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Alyani had also taken notice of the matter and directed the Provincial Disaster Management Authority to deploy its technical team and ensure the safe recovery of the workers, provincial government spokesperson Liaquat Shahwani told DawnNewsTV on Monday.

Balochistan’s Labour Federation has expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s efforts. Peer Muhammad Kakar, a member of the body, said: “Neither the government nor the mine owners are bothered about the plight of the hapless miners. The administration is still clueless about the trapped miners even though 24 hours have passed [since the workers were trapped].”

Poor working conditions inside coal mines in Balochistan claim the lives of miners on an almost daily basis in Harnai, Sowrange, Dukki, Mach and other parts of the province, but often go unreported.

Coal mining is considered much more hazardous than hard rock mining due to flat-lying rock strata, generally incompetent rock, leakage or explosion of poisonous gases and coal dust, collapsing of mine stopes or general mechanical errors from improper use and malfunctioning of mining equipment.

According to the Pakistan Central Mines Labour Federation (PCMLF), between 100 and 200 labourers die on average in coal mine accidents every year.

The Daily Mail, UK accuses Shehbaz Sharif of stealing Aid money

UK’s Daily Mail on Sunday has accused former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif of embezzling tens of millions of pounds of public money from aid given by Britain’s Department for International Development (DFID) and laundering it in the United Kingdom.

The report says DFID poured more than £500 million of UK taxpayers’ money into Punjab in the form of aid during Shehbaz’s tenure as chief minister. “Legal documents allege that Shahbaz’s son-in-law received about £1 million from the fund established to rebuild the lives of earthquake victims,” the newspaper reported. “Stolen millions were laundered in Birmingham and then allegedly transferred to Shahbaz’s family’s accounts by UK branches of banks including Barclays and HSBC,” it added. “Britain’s National Crime Agency is working closely with Pakistani investigators and Home Secretary Sajid Javid is discussing the possible extradition of members of Shahbaz’s family who have taken refuge in London,” it added.

“Yet, say investigators, all the time that DFID was heaping him and his government with praise and taxpayers’ cash, Shehbaz and his family were embezzling tens of millions of pounds of public money and laundering it in Britain,” writes reporter David Rose. “They are convinced that some of the allegedly stolen money came from DFID-funded aid projects,” the report says.

The report states that the newspaper was last week given exclusive access to some of the results of a high-level probe ordered by Prime Minister Imran Khan and also allowed to interview key witnesses held on remand in jail, including a UK citizen Aftab Mehmood. Mehmood, according to the report, claims he laundered millions on behalf of Shehbaz’s family from a nondescript office in Birmingham.

PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif vowed to sue the British newspaper for publishing ‘fabricated’ and ‘misleading’ story. Taking to the microblogging site, Twitter, on Sunday, the leader of the opposition in National Assembly alleged that the story was published at the behest of Prime Minister Imran Khan and his special assistant on accountability Mirza Shahzad Akbar. “Have decided to file law suit against Daily Mail. The fabricated and misleading story was published at the behest of Imran Khan and Shahzad Akbar. We will also launch legal proceedings against them. Btw IK has yet to respond to three such cases I filed against him for defamation,” he posted on his Twitter handle.

The response comes minutes after PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb, while addressing a news conference, refuted the controversial story, saying the party will take legal action against the prime minister, his special assistant and British publication. The PML president said that he will also launch legal proceedings against the prime minister and his assistant. “IK [Imran Khan] has yet to respond to three such cases I filed against him for defamation,” he said.

England finally takes it home

England won the World Cup for the first time as they beat New Zealand in a dramatic Super Over after a nerve-shredding final ended in a tie at Lord´s on Sunday.

Needing a modest 242 for victory, the hosts ended on 241 all out, with Ben Stokes unbeaten on 84, sending the match into a Super Over. The six-ball shootout also ended in a tie, with both sides hitting 15 runs, but Eoin Morgan’s side won by virtue of a superior boundary count in the match.

After defeats in previous finals against Pakistan in 1992, Australia in 1987 and the West Indies in 1979, it was a cathartic moment for English cricket. England´s triumph was the culmination of a remarkable rise over the past four years.

While England celebrated, it was another heart-breaking loss for New Zealand, who also finished as runners-up in the previous World Cup in 2015 after losing to Australia in the final.

Meet the Pakistani playing Marvel’s first on-screen hijabi character

How often do Muslim women see themselves being represented in Hollywood without being stereotyped?

The London-based Pakistani can be seen in the new Spider-Man: Far From Home alongside Tom Holland, Jake Gyllenhaal and Zendaya to name a few. And it’s not a background character; she plays the superhero’s hijabi classmate who joins him on a school trip to Europe. That’s quite the big break.

In an interview with The News (Images), the actress opens up about breaking barriers, Hollywood portrayals of South Asian characters and how she stumbled into acting.

Zoha said:  “My character is already breaking barriers, I can’t speak particularly for the MCU but mainstream media in its entirety is a narration of the morals, values and expectations of society that we grow up believing.

Yet we keep seeing caricatures of ourselves and irresponsible portrayals of our cultures, so many of us grow to distance ourselves from our truth for fear of being ridiculed. We are South Asian but we’re not that taxi driver or terrorist kind of South Asian you see in movies, we also don’t have THAT accent from television shows but we know all those things pop up in people’s minds when they see us.”

Why has PML-N yet not presented the court with their “undeniable proof”?: Aitzaz Ahsan

Senator Aitzaz Ahsan, a former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association and senior advocate of the Supreme Court on tuesday wondered that why hasn’t PML-N still not approached the court with their strong evidence that can set their supreme leader Nawaz free from incarceration.

Ahsan noted that the accountability judge Arshad Malik agreed that the meeting did take place but he also added that there is “cutting and rendering” of the tape and has marked the tape “tempered”.

Ahsan expressed the view that in the press conference held by the party to bring the tape to the fore, Khawaja Haris, Sharif’s lead counsel, should have been sitting alongside the other members and should have declared that the party shall be submitting the tape to the court the very next day, along with a request to have it forensically examined and to expediently release Sharif from jail custody.

“For that, the person who recorded the audio will have to appear before the court and provide a testimony under oath. Similarly, the person who recorded the video will have to appear and also give a testimony under oath. A third person who cannot be identified, and whose arms and legs alone can be seen in the video, will have to appear as well”.

Ahsan added that any photographic evidence that is submitted in the court is not admissible until or unless the the photographer or videographer gives a testimony under oath that the evidence was surely taken by him and if the person doesn’t appear then, the evidence is of zero value.

He, however, also pointed out that the urgency should come from the PML-N’s side to see Sharif freed as soon as possible.

“They should say, ‘We have genuine evidence. We have that smoking gun with which the murder was committed.'”

“They should rush it to the courts and insist that the matter be pursued immediately. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Ahsan Iqbal should delay this no further. And neither should Shehbaz Sharif, if he wishes to see his brother and ‘quaid’ released. He should, in fact, go to court himself.”

“Why should he wait for a suo motu?” Ahsan remarked.

When asked what reason could there be behind the party’s inaction to approach the court, the PPP leader said: “Then releasing the tape is just a political thing. The matter pertains to the court. Then,it is just the courts getting maligned. The judicial process, the legal process, and their image have all been severely tarnished.”

He said that rather than the courts “attempting to clear their name”, as proposed by the anchor, the PML-N should be impatient to do something.

“They have such an important piece of evidence in the case against Nawaz Sharif — if it is untampered. It is so important that they should be running to the court with it and pleading: ‘For God’s sake, release Nawaz Sharif today.'”

“And the court may very well, the next day, call in witnesses: Nasir Butt, person behind the camera, the one who did the editing, the streaming, etc,” he surmised.

PPP can topple the new government: Bilawal Bhutto

Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that the party could topple the selected government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, but they were caring about the fragile parliamentary democracy which was never allowed by the military dictators to complete three consecutive terms.

“We want to give hope to our next generation that democracy would be the future of this country and will continue democratic struggle instead of resorting to aggression and violence,” he remarked while talking to journalists in meet the press programme of Peshawar Press Club. Former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani, provincial president Pakistan Peoples Party Humayun Khan, MPA Nighat Orakzai and former senior minister Rahim Dad Khan were also present on the occasion.

Bilawal said that the people of Pakistan had greater expectations from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government, but instead of focusing on human development and strengthening institution, he has focused on political victimisation of opposition leaders. Instead of developing consensus with opposition parties, the prime minister has resorted to the politics of confrontation.

He said that today on July 5, the military dictator general Zia-ul-Haq abrogated the 1973 constitution of Pakistan which was framed by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto with the consensus of other political parties. He said today he has visited Peshawar Press Club to start his struggle against selected government from Peshawar. Pakistan Peoples Party in its five-year term always struggled for the rights of the province to strengthen the bonds of federation and for this purpose they have struggled since Zia-ul-Haq military dictatorship.

He severely criticised the PTI-led government for arresting Rana Sanullah in alleged fake drug case and said that it is utter violation of basic human rights and tantamount to pressurise the opposition parties. He said that they are not fearful of these tactics and would keep up their peaceful struggle for restoration of true democracy.
