KARACHI: Chicken prices have increased sharply in Karachi, leaving consumers worried about the rising prices.
Over the past week, the price of chicken has increased by Rs 130 per kg to Rs 660 per kg.
Egg prices are also seeing a surge, with retail prices reaching Rs 380 per dozen, significantly higher than the official rate of Rs 344. Local eggs are being sold at Rs 650 per dozen in the wholesale market.
Poultry traders attribute the increase to supply problems and the expectation of increased demand as winter approaches, with prices likely to rise further in the future.
However, residents have expressed disappointment over the unregulated price hike, questioning the effectiveness of price control measures.
Earlier this month, prices of various pulses in Pakistan’s wholesale market fell significantly, providing relief to consumers amid rising prices of common commodities.
According to the Wholesale Grocers Association, the price of black peas has fallen by Rs 50 per kg since September, from Rs 400 per kg earlier, while chickpeas are now available at Rs 360 per kg and are likely to reach Rs 300 per kg next month.
Similarly, the price of dal mash has come down from Rs 500 per kg to Rs 425 per kg.
Globally, pulses prices have fallen by more than $100 per tonne, falling from $860 to below $750 per tonne.
The association’s chairman, Rauf Ibrahim, attributes the decline to a drop in demand from major buyers like India and Sri Lanka.
