ISLAMABAD: The National Highway Authority (NHA) has announced a 10% increase in toll tax rates for the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway (M2), effective from Monday, August 25.

This means that a standard vehicle traveling from Lahore to Islamabad will now pay Rs 1210, up from Rs 1100. However, commercial vehicles, including vans, trailers, and trucks, will face an even steeper increase, with tolls rising by up to Rs 600.

The new toll rates for commercial vehicles are increased, vans will pay Rs 2030, coaters will pay Rs 2840 (up from Rs 2240), buses will pay Rs 4060, trucks will pay Rs 5280, and trailers will pay Rs 6780.

This increase is part of an annual 10% hike as per the contract agreement with M/s Motorway Operations and Rehabilitation Engineering (Private) Limited, a subsidiary owned by the Frontier Works Organization (FWO), signed on April 23, 2014.

The agreement stipulates a 10% escalation in toll rates every year for 20 years. The spokesperson for the Motorway Authority confirmed that the new toll rates have been implemented across all interchanges on the M2 Motorway.

In addition, this increase is likely to affect thousands of commuters who use the motorway daily, including travelers, traders, and transporters.

The authorities have not provided any justification for the increase, but it is likely to generate additional revenue for the NHA and FWO.
