Punjab proposes monthly fuel relief for bikers

LAHORE: The Punjab government has sent a summary to the finance department for approval of Rs 24 billion under the proposed subsidy scheme for bikers.

According to sources, the summary has been sent to the Punjab Chief Minister for approval, after which the money will be released. The government plans to provide relief of up to Rs 2,000 per month to about 12.5 million motorcycle riders in the province.

Excise department sources say that under the scheme, a subsidy of up to Rs 100 will be given on per liter of petrol, while more than 8 million bikers have registered so far.

According to statistics, about 50 million motorcycles have been registered in Punjab since 1980. Officials say that the subsidy scheme will be formally launched as soon as the registration process is completed.
