KARACHI: The chicken retailers, wholesalers, and shopkeepers in Karachi made a bold decision on Monday and announced a shutter-down strike in opposition to what they consider to be “unnecessary fines and arrests.”
Due to this announcement, wholesalers are no longer providing chicken to Karachi vendors, which has caused retailers in the local market to go on a complete shutter-down strike until their complaints are resolved.
The poultry association’s spokesperson expressed extreme displeasure and accused the administration of releasing a rate list without considering the situation on the ground. The spokesperson claims that this has made things very difficult for vendors of poultry.
The Poultry Association in Sindh and Balochistan demanded that the administration release the official chicken price on a daily basis, citing the impracticability of a uniform rate for poultry sales. They maintain that in order to appropriately reflect market dynamics, a daily assessment is necessary due to the variety of factors influencing chicken prices.
This strike comes after the Poultry Association protested against uniform chicken rates in Punjab last month in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Vendors of poultry in the twin cities responded by stopping their supply, and the Mandi Bagh Sardaran wholesale market observed a full shutdown until the local government complied with the demands made by the poultry association.

A spokesman for the Poultry Union highlighted that suppliers, wholesalers, and retailers all agreed on pricing and that they couldn’t sell chicken meat for less than what it costs. The spokesperson also issued a warning, saying that until the local authorities settled the ongoing price dispute, the market would not be able to sell chicken meat.
