ISLAMABAD: Tomato prices surged throughout Pakistan, slamming consumers in key cities according to per-kilogram rates that rise significantly above the ordinary market rate.
Karachi sellers are quoting between Rs. 500 and Rs. 700 per kilogram, while official government selling prices are at Rs. 322 per kg. Vendors in the Federal B Area quoted Rs. 650 per kg, while Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Burns Road areas of the city reported sales at Rs. 700 per kg.
Tomatoes have touched a seasonal peak of Rs. 600 per kg in Sakrand tehsil of Sindh’s Shaheed Benazirabad district, according to local traders.
Merchants in Faisalabad linked the peak to governance failures, terming retailers as having exploited lax regulation. There, peas and tomatoes were retailing at approximately Rs. 500 per kg.
Peshawar bazaars saw steep jumps in a wide array of vegetables. Tomatoes have passed consecutive 100-rupee milestones, and onions have also moved above Rs100 per kg.
Quetta had lower prices for tomatoes than other cities, with the vendors selling tomatoes at around Rs. 300 per kg.
