KARACHI: In response to rising utility costs, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board has approved a 23 percent increase in water and sewerage bills.

The decision, made at a board meeting led by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, includes a 14 percent rise in water charges and a nine percent increase in sewerage charges, effective next month.

The hike adds to the financial strain on residents already facing higher utility bills. Jamaat-e-Islami has strongly opposed the increase, with Saifuddin Advocate, the party’s leader in the Karachi City Council, criticizing the board for failing to deliver basic services and calling the increase unacceptable.

Additionally, municipal tax is now being collected through electricity bills, further impacting living costs in Karachi. The decision is part of broader efforts to address the city’s growing financial demands for municipal services.
