In a first, Sindh announces ‘GPA system’ for matric, intermediate exams

KARACHI: The Sindh government has unveiled a new grading policy for matriculation (Grade 9 and 10) and intermediate-level (Grade 11 and 12) exams across the province, effective from 2024.

Students of the province from Grades 9 to 12 will not get traditional marks and positions, but grades, GPA, and CGPA, the notification issued by Sindh Universities & Boards Department stated, making Sindh the first province in the country to implement such a system.

Under the new system, the first, second, and third positions will also be abolished. The move aims to modernize the education system and encourage a more balanced approach to academic performance.

The notification further stated that the pass percentage has been increased from 33% to 40% at the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) level for all subjects, effective from the annual examinations 2025.

New grading system in Sindh

As per the new policy, students scoring 95% or above will be awarded an A++ grade (5.0 GPA), while those scoring between 90% and 94% will receive an A+ grade (4.7 GPA). A grade (4.3 GPA) will be awarded to the percentage between 85% to 89%

If a student gets 80-84%, he/she will be awarded B++ grade (4.0 GPA), 75-79% will receive B+ (3.7 GPA), 70-74% will get B (3.3 GPA), and 60-69% will get C (3.0 GPA).

The student getting a percentage below 40% will be considered failed.
