Major Contests: Winners and losers in Pakistan General Elections 2024

Despite having only been in the polls for almost a day, there have already been some significant upsets and victories as the country casts its ballot for MPs on February 8.

In the fifth-largest democracy in the world, a sizable portion of the populace utilized their right to vote to choose representatives for national and local assemblies, covering 855 constituencies, in spite of the suspension of internet and mobile phone services.

In a number of ways, the 2024 elections exceeded the 2018 ones: a record budget of Rs48 billion was allocated; more than 50% of the population voted; an unprecedented number of independent candidates ran; a total of almost 18,000 candidates were fielded; and a significant amount of paper was needed to print 260 million ballots.

As voters cast their ballots, Nawaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, the leading candidates for prime minister, emerged winners. The results are still rolling in, though, and it’s unclear when they will all be combined.
