ISLAMABAD: A major initiative is underway today to establish lasting peace in Kurram district, with leaders of stakeholder tribes meeting in Islamabad to find a solution to the ongoing issues.
According to a Jirga member Syed Raza Hussain, the meeting will be at the home of former Senator Sajjad Syed Mian and a plan will be drawn up for clearing misunderstandings and addressing outstanding problems.
The leaders of the region have begun arriving in Islamabad, and important progress is expected from today’s meeting. The meeting aims to discuss solutions to the difficulties faced by people in the region and practical steps to implement the peace agreement.
Firing and fighting incidents have forced traffic routes between Kurram, and Parachinar to close for four months, which adds to the desperation of the Kurram district.
Under siege-like circumstances, half a million residents in the region have no food, fuel, or medical services. Lokal sosyal lider Yousaf Lala stated that lack of care has killed 460 individuals, among 202 children.
Although attempts to shift critical patients through helicopter toRawalpindi and Peshawar are being made, but the condition is still serious. Protesting leader Malik Haji Karim maintains that the protest will go on until the matter is settled.
The Kurram district has been plagued by violence and clashes between rival tribes, with the conflict originating from a land dispute in the village of Boshera.
The situation has escalated, with multiple areas in the district affected, and both sides using heavy weaponry.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister has taken notice of the violence and directed the Department of Home and Tribal Affairs to take swift action to restore peace.
