KARACHI: In a major initiative to improve access to emergency medical care in the densely populated neighborhoods and narrow streets of Karachi, Rescue 1122 has launched a bicycle ambulance service.

The initiative aims to reach areas where traditional ambulances often face difficulty in travelling due to congestion and infrastructure limitations. Uniquely, the bicycle ambulances are operated by trained female volunteers, making it not only an innovative healthcare solution but also a significant step towards women empowerment.

Despite their modest appearance, the bicycle ambulances are fully equipped with essential medical equipment, including oxygen masks, sugar testing kits, nebulizers, and other first aid, enabling responders to provide immediate on-site care.

Rescue 1122 CEO Brigadier (R) Tariq Qadir said that the service is eco-friendly, efficient, and a symbol of women empowerment. They described the project as a significant step towards providing basic health services to the general public, especially in deprived areas.

The women volunteers expressed their pride in their participation, expressing a strong sense of duty and commitment to serving the people.

The initiative has been appreciated by citizens, who see it as a practical and effective step towards improving access to healthcare in informal settlements.

More than just a medical response service, cycle ambulances also reflect a broader vision of social development and comprehensive community support.
