Despite the ban, Basant celebrated in Rawalpindi

Despite a ban, Basant was observed here on Thursday and Friday in several city areas. Over 7400 kites and about 300 rolls of kite flying thread were found in the possession of the police, who also arrested 187 kite flyers and merchants.

A police spokesperson reported that on Thursday night, the police apprehended 81 individuals who were in violation of the kite flying restriction and seized more than 4400 kites, 104 string rolls, a sound system, firearms, and other materials.

He told that on Friday, over 3000 kites and several dozen kite flying string rolls were found by the police, and 106 offenders were put behind bars.

During this season, more than 61,000 kites and about 1200 string rolls were recovered, and more than 600 accused people were taken into custody. He said that kite flyers and merchants were apprehended by police from Rattaamral, Pirwadhai, R.A.Bazar, New Town, Sadiqabad, Airport, Westridge, Naseerabad, City, and Waris Khan during raids within their respective jurisdictions.

Despite the police’s unambiguous warning that kite flying was prohibited and that violators would face harsh consequences, devotees celebrated the basant.

Dhamial, Arya Mohallah, Chah Sultan, Ratta Amral, Pindora, Naya Mohalla, Railway colony, Pirwadhai, Satellite Town, Rattaamral, Pirwadhai, R.A.Bazar, New Town, Sadiqabad, Westridge, Naseerabad, Waris Khan, Committee Chowk, and other areas were among those where basant festivity was observed, despite police crackdowns.

In a number of places, especially crowded ones, authorities had a very hard time apprehending the kite flyers. Following the orders of Syed Khalid Mehmood Hamdani, the City Police Officer (CPO), the police carried out a targeted operation against kite merchants and flyers on Friday.

According to the spokesman, special teams led by senior police officials were conducting searches in various locations, and all police stations have been instructed to step up their ongoing operations against those who violate the ban on flying kites.
