The newly elected members of the Punjab Assembly will take oath in the first meeting of the legislative body tomorrow after the general elections on February 8. The meeting will be held at 10 am on Friday.

Punjab Governor Baligh Ur Rehman issued the notification to convene a meeting of the Punjab Assembly tomorrow. In the meantime, Speaker Sibtain Khan will administrate the oath of the newly elected members until a new speaker is elected.

The announcement regarding the session of the assembly was made one day after the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) held the parliamentary party meeting a Jati Umran in Lahore.

As per reports, 218 members, including independent candidates, PML-N MPAs, and candidates nominated for reserved seats, were in attendance at the meeting.

There were 137 successful candidates, 58 women nominated for reserved seats, and more than 22 independent members who joined the PMLN after the Feb 8 polls.

It is noteworthy that 186 members were required to form the government. Among the newly elected members, Maryam Nawaz will be one of the new candidates to enter the provincial assembly as an elected member.

Maryam Nawaz won NA-119 and PP-159 – both National and Provincial Assembly seats respectively – in the February 8 elections. She has also been nominated as the PML-N’s candidate for the post of the chief minister.

During the parliamentary board meeting on Wednesday, Maryam vowed to serve the province in a manner that would set records of good governance in the country. A new era will begin in Punjab, she said.
