Senate Elections 2024: Examination of nomination papers scheduled for March 19

The examination of nomination papers for the 48 open Senate seats will take place on March 19 as the elections for these seats draw nearer. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has previously declared that April 2 Senate elections will be held in order to fill the open seats. The candidates have until March 27 to withdraw their candidacy papers, after which the updated list of candidates will be released on the 26th of this month. Members of the National Assembly will choose senators from among one general seat and one seat reserved for technocrats, such as Ulemas, in the nation’s capital.

Seven general seats, two women’s seats, two seats for technocrats, including Ulema from each province, and one seat for non-Muslims from both Punjab and Sindh provinces will be chosen by members of the four provincial assembly. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 42 candidates have filed their candidacy papers for the Senate. 25 candidates have filed their nomination papers for seven general seats, according to a list released by Sohail Ahmad, the spokesperson for the ECP KP chapter. Ten candidates have also filed their candidacy documents for the province’s two technocrat and ulema seats.

For the two KP seats designated for women, nomination papers from seven female candidates have been received. In the meantime, the preliminary list of contenders for the province’s open seats in the parliament’s upper house was made public by the Balochistan election commission. A representative for the province election commission stated that 38 candidates’ nomination papers for the 11 Senate seats in Balochistan have been accepted. There are seven open seats: two for technocrats, two for women, and two for general.

The spokesperson went on to state that nomination papers for 17 candidates were accepted for 7 Senate general seats. According to the official, eight candidates’ nomination papers for two seats in the women’s category and the nomination papers of thirteen candidates for two technocrat seats were authorized.
