NEW YORK: US Secretary of Homeland Security Christie Noemi said that the suspect in the Brown University shooting had used the green card lottery program to come to the United States.
The United States has announced the suspension of the green card lottery program after the shooting incident at Brown University.
The US green card lottery program is actually called the Diversity Visa (DV) program, a government immigration program of the US government that aims to give citizens of countries around the world from which immigration rates to the US have been low the opportunity to permanently reside in the US.
Under this program, about 50,000 people are given green cards through a lottery every year, which allows them to live permanently in the US, work and later become eligible for citizenship.
It should be noted that a few days ago, a shooting incident occurred at Brown University and MIT. The accused, Portuguese citizen Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, came to the United States in 2017 under the Diversity Visa Lottery Program and was given a green card.
Neves, 48, is accused of shooting at Brown University, killing 2 students and injuring 9 people, while an MIT professor was also killed in the incident.
