ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday initiated the ‘Apna Meter, Apni Reading‘ programme through the Power Smart App, empowering consumers to provide their own electricity meter readings.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif introduced an initiative to reduce overbilling and errors by engaging consumers directly in the billing process. In the new regime, users of electricity can click a photo of their meter and upload it via the app on a designated day of every month.
When timely, this self-read meter will be utilized to determine the bill, superseding any later reading by utility personnel.
The Power Division stated that the system is a strategic action aimed at minimizing billing disputes, ridding the system of misreadings, and reducing unnecessary human intervention. It has been greatly acclaimed as a forward-thinking reform in the power industry.
The app is particularly crucial for low-consumption consumers who are eligible for a government subsidy on electricity bills. Today, if consumers have up to 200 units in consumption, they are billed approximately Rs. 2,330.
Exceeding the threshold by just one unit can make them ineligible for the subsidy and increase their bill to as much as Rs. 8,104. Users eligible for the subsidy benefit can get their reporting right with this app and continue to get their subsidy benefit.
Power Smart App is live and can be downloaded, with an easy-to-use interface that encourages user responsibility and consumer empowerment in electric billing.
