KARACHI: Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) has launched the Social Protection Wallets for one million beneficiaries who have enrolled, ensuring that the process for delivering cash assistance is more transparent, safer, and more user-friendly.

To support the shift to this new digital payment model, BISP has started distributing free mobile SIMs across the country amongst its women beneficiaries.

The initiative follows directions from President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who instructed BISP to modernize its payment system. According to the organization, this rollout ranks among the world’s largest social protection efforts.

While making the announcement, BISP Chairperson Senator Rubina Khalid explained how women can avail of this new service. She said that beneficiaries should visit the nearest BISP office or camp, along with the original CNIC and an operational mobile phone. Upon verification through biometric means, each woman will be given a free SIM, which will then be utilized for activating her Social Protection Wallet.

Senator Khalid emphasized that the SIM is absolutely free and that beneficiaries should not give any amount to anyone. She mentioned that BISP is the only authorized agency to activate such wallets and that beneficiaries must refrain from seeking help from unverified individuals or agents.

She elaborated that the wallet would facilitate and secure the disbursement process. Henceforth, all BISP payments and installments would be transferred only through this digital wallet, and all official notifications would be sent directly to the very same SIM.

He described the SIM as “the digital wallet that carries your financial power,” urging women to protect it like their personal valuables. According to BISP, the project is a major milestone in achieving better financial independence and empowerment for needy women in Pakistan. Beneficiaries have been advised to collect their free SIMs from BISP offices or assigned camps by December 31.
