Federal govt authorizes ISI to intercept, trace calls, messages for national security

ISLAMABAD: The Federal government authorized Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) officials to intercept calls and messages or to trace calls through any telecommunication system.

The federal cabinet has authorized an intelligence agency under section 54 of the Pakistan Telecommunication Act, 1996 in the interest of national security and the apprehension of any offence.

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has issued a gazette notification to this effect.

According to the notification, the government authorized the officers not below the rank of grade 18 to be nominated from time to time by Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for phone tapping.

As per the notification, the nominated officers will have the authority to intercept calls and messages or to trace calls through any telecommunication system as envisaged under Section 54 of the Act.
