ISLAMABAD: The federal government challenged the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and Senior PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi in a cipher case on Thursday.

Islamabad High Court (IHC) acquitted PTI founder Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi in the Cipher Case on June 3.

Currently, the appeal against the IHC order argues that the Islamabad High Court (IHC) was not entitled to hear the case since the Official Secret Act does not authorize the right to review a trial court’s decision.

The Ministry of Interior also filed the petition against IHC’s verdict, demanding to dismiss the acquittal orders and restore the case to its ongoing position.

It stated that the prosecution had presented solid arguments in the cipher case. It appealed the Supreme Court to declare IHC’s verdict of acquittal null and void and continue the case again, it added.

On Jan 30, a special court hearing cipher case passed a 10-year jail to Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi. The FIR stated that the former prime minister and foreign minister distorted the facts of the diplomatic cipher and both were suspects of ‘conspiracy to misuse the contents of the cipher to fulfill nefarious purpose’.

The case further stated that the former premier and top diplomat endangered the state’s interests.
