KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has postponed its planned protest outside the Sindh Governor’s House in Karachi following the assassination of Hamas Political Wing Chief Ismail Haniyeh.

The sit-in, initially organized to address issues with inflated electricity bills, has been delayed in response to Haniyeh’s death in Iran. Instead, the party will hold funeral prayers in absentia for Haniyeh at M.A. Jinnah Road at 5 pm today.

Hamas announced that Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli strike while he was in Tehran for the inauguration of Iran’s new president. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed the strike, stating that Haniyeh and a bodyguard were killed in the attack on his residence.

Moreover, Hamas has condemned the assassination, calling Haniyeh a “brother, leader, and mujahid” and vowing that his killing “will not go unpunished.”

The postponement of the JI’s protest in Karachi highlights the party’s solidarity with the Palestinian cause and its mourning of the loss of a prominent Hamas leader.

The decision highlights the broader impact that geopolitical events can have on local political activities and demonstrations.
