ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has dismissed social media claims about an unusual cold wave and snowfall in the country.
Addressing the rumours on Friday, the PMD clarified that reports suggesting snowfall in central Punjab like Saudi Arabia between January 12 and 15, as well as the “coldest days and nights in 100 years,” are completely false and have no scientific basis.
The department stressed that snowfall in central Punjab is not possible due to the geographical and climatic features of the region, dismissing such claims as baseless.
According to the PMD, the weather is expected to remain cold and dry in most parts of Pakistan. However, no evidence supports the occurrence of an unusually severe or historic cold spell.
Light rain or drizzle with strong winds may affect areas of Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Okara, Sahiwal, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur and Pakpattan on January 11.
The PMD has urged the public to fully rely on accurate information shared through its official platforms and avoid believing unverified news received from unofficial sources, which only spread unnecessary fear.
The department reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety by providing reliable weather forecasts and updates.
