ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways has launched a major initiative aimed at enhancing accessibility for passengers with disabilities.

This new program offers a discount of up to 50 percent (pc) on train fares for persons with disabilities travelling on all express and passenger trains except the Green Line.

To avail this discount, passengers will have to present their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) which includes details of their disability. Additionally, those travelling with visually impaired passengers will benefit from concessional fares for their attendants.

This initiative is part of Pakistan Railways’ broader efforts to make travel more inclusive for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) across the country. The program is designed to enhance the convenience and accessibility of train travel for millions of disabled passengers in Pakistan.

In support of this effort, Pakistan Railways has introduced various facilities at key stations, such as wheelchair provision, booking counters at reservation offices, and accessible executive washrooms at select stations. These services are planned to be expanded to 12 more stations soon.

By providing these concessions and services, Pakistan Railways aims to offer a more comfortable, independent travel experience for people with disabilities.

Earlier on November 29, Pakistan Railways reported a remarkable increase in revenue, achieving a historic benchmark in its financial performance.

According to Pakistan Railways CEO Aamir Ali Baloch, the state-owned entity earned a revenue of Rs33 billion during the last five months, reflecting a 14 percent year-on-year growth compared to Rs29 billion recorded during the same period last year.

This represents a revenue increase of over Rs4 billion, driven by improved operational efficiency and improved strategic revenue.

In addition, the CEO highlighted the encouraging prospects for the Main Line-1 (ML-1) project, indicating that groundwork is expected to commence by March 2025, which will position the organization for long-term infrastructure growth and profitability.

Strong financial performance reinforces Pakistan Railways’ direction for sustainable growth and operational flexibility in the transport sector.
