NEW YORK: In a recent development, Pakistan permennant envoy to the United Nations Ambassador Asim Iftikhar met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss the developing situation in the region, particularly amid the rising tension between Pakistan and India.
Ambassador Asim briefed the Secretary-General on the recent developments and conveyed Pakistan’s concerns over the deteriorating regional situation.
According to a statement released by Pakistan’s Mission to the United Nations, the two sides had a thorough conversation about the region’s present geopolitical situation. The envoy referred to India’s activities as “extremely provocative and irresponsible,” warning that they represent a severe danger to regional peace.
In his remarks, the Pakistani envoy asked the UN to take a constructive role in defusing tensions and upholding international law and the UN Charter.
Additionally, Ambassador Iftikhar is expected to brief international media on the results of his meeting with the Secretary-General and Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach regarding the South Asian situation at a significant press conference in New York today at 8 p.m. Pakistan Standard Time.
The ambassador had previously informed representatives of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) group at the UN of Pakistan’s concerns on India’s activities and urged a coordinated response to maintain regional peace and justice.
Pakistan is seeking international assistance to offset what it perceives as aggressive posturing by its eastern neighbor, and the summit takes place at a time when Islamabad and New Delhi are experiencing heightened diplomatic tension.
