ISLAMABAD: In the aftermath of the closely contested general elections of 2024, Pakistan’s political landscape has been marked by tension and uncertainty as rival parties vie for power. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), asserting itself as a major political force, found itself in a heated exchange with ride-sharing giant Careem over a social media post.

With provisional results indicating a fragmented political scenario, independent candidates, many backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), emerged as frontrunners in securing National Assembly seats. The PML-N, despite its expectations of a majority victory to form governments at both the federal and provincial levels, fell short in the results.

In the midst of this political standoff, Careem’s Twitter post featuring a cryptic yet humorous remark attributed to PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat, stirred controversy. The post, which came at a time of heightened political tension, was met with criticism from the PML-N, prompting calls for a boycott of the ride-sharing service.

The reaction to Careem’s post sparked a debate among social media users, with some expressing support for the company’s freedom of expression, while others condemned what they saw as its unwarranted involvement in political affairs.

As the nation awaits clarity on the formation of governments at both the federal and provincial levels, the incident involving Careem serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between corporate neutrality and political sensitivities in Pakistan’s evolving democratic landscape.
