LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday said that the government has set a new record by building 62,500 houses in 6 months in Punjab under its flagship “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” scheme.
She made her remarks during a ceremony at the Expo Centre Lahore related to the disbursement of more than 50,000 interest-free loan cheques among the eligible citizens for the Apni Chhat Apna Ghar housing initiative.
According to the Punjab government spokesperson, under the new phase of the scheme, the land will also be given by the Punjab government to build houses.
While talking at the ceremony, she said that interest-free loans of more than Rs 74 billion were given under the five to ten marla housing projects.
“The Apni Chhat Apna Ghar project has become an unrivaled government project in terms of completion, quality, and speed in a record time,” Nawaz stated.
The chief minister further said that both installments of the loan have been released to more than 37,000 families, and more than 52,000 houses are under construction.
The target of building one lakh houses will be achieved in December this year, she stated, vowing to provide one lakh houses every year.
Last month, the Punjab government released Rs42.013 billion for the Apni Chat Apna Ghar scheme under the 2025-26 Annual Development Programme.
The housing project was launched in August 2024, which offers interest-free loans of up to Rs1.5 million to individuals for constructing homes on their land.
Since its launch last year, over 51,911 families have benefited, with 6,160 housing units already completed and occupied, and another 45,163 units under construction across Punjab.
Apni Chhat Apna Ghar’s initiative aims at supporting families with a monthly income below Rs50,000, those living in rental properties.
This initiative will benefit residents in key cities, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Multan, and Sargodha, which will later be expanded across the province. By providing affordable housing options, the government aims to address the pressing need for shelter among low-income families and contribute to the overall development of these cities.
