LAHORE: In a recent development, the Punjab government has announced the last date to register for the free solar panel program is January 5, 2025.

Residents are required to send their National Identity Card (CNIC) number via SMS to 8800 or register online through the pre-prepared portal by PITB.

The commencement of this initiative was on December 6, 2024, by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, for the people of Punjab using up to 100-200 units of electricity.

The scheme hopes to distribute 100,000 solar systems in the coming year, with those who use up to 100 units of electricity receiving 550-watt solar systems, and those who use 200 units receiving 1100-watt solar systems.

Eligibility Criteria for Free Solar Panel Scheme

The provisions for the eligibility criterion under the free solar panel scheme include domestic electricity consumers with a monthly usage of 0-200 units, sanctioned load of up to 2 kW, and, based on the June 2024 electricity bill, certain billing category consumers are eligible. They will be disqualified from the scheme if they steal electricity, have defective or multiple meters, or have defaulted on three or more payments within the last 12 months.

It is hoped that by providing free solar panels, the scheme will lessen the electricity payments of eligible consumers, while, at the same time, the program will come to bear on the sustainability of the environment due to a cut in the annual carbon emissions of about 57,000 tons.

Balloting Process

In order to promote transparency, computerized balloting’s will select beneficiaries, with verification of the reference numbers and CNIC digits made through monthly electricity bills. A helpline will also be set up to assist consumers with the registration and installation processes.

These solar panels and inverters will be linked to the consumers’ CNICs in order to prevent pilferage, and this project is expected to ease the burden of the federal government subsidy and further the very idea of renewable energy in Punjab.
