LAHORE: In a recent development, the Punjab Police have set in motion to raise security at border checkpost by introducing a unit of Afghan Kuchi breed dogs across borders.
Initially, those dogs were posted in 11 border police posts across the province, and were purposed to chase criminals, disperse violent protesters, and instill an extra layer of security in sensitive areas.
These dogs will undergo five months of training before being deployed for regular security activities, and to buttress this initiative, the police will hire 10 professional dog handlers in the Riot Management Police unit for the training and supervision of the dogs.
These dogs, at the very outset, will greatly reduce casualties during crucial operations and strengthen the tracking of criminals fleeing border areas. The presence of these dogs is deemed a game-changer in the war against terror and crime, according to officials.
It should be noted that the Afghan Kuchi breed is known for its strong build and swift movements, making it a perfect candidate for such work.
The Punjab Police have also announced the second phase of this project, which aims at introducing even more fighting dogs to further strengthen this innovative security measure.
This is the first time that the Punjab Police have ever inducted fighting dogs into the police force, next to sniffer dogs. That clearly outlines their commitment to using innovative strategies for counter-terrorism and crime control.
As had already been formed into another training ground for the police dogs, a dedicated facility has also been set up for the training of sniffer dogs in the Police Dogs Breeding Centre and Training School Bedian. Essentially, the new fighter dogs coming in attempt to extend this innovative security measure.
