LAHORE: Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif unveiled the historic ‘Kissan Package’ and the solarization scheme for agricultural tube wells for the development of farmers.
Farmers owning 25 acres of agricultural land will be eligible for the solarization scheme. The government will pay 67 percent of the project while farmers will have to pay only 33 percent.
In the first phase, about 7,000 tube wells will be converted to solar energy. In the second phase, with the support of the federal government, about 10,000 tube wells will be converted to solar energy.
Running a tube well on diesel costs about Rs 3,000 per acre, while electricity costs Rs 1,500. During this time, only Rs. 50 per acre will be spent to run a tube well on solar energy for irrigation. The Punjab Chief Minister ordered to formulate a special package for vegetable farmers.
Addressing the meeting, Maryam Nawaz directed to create a sustainable and effective system of supply management of onions, tomatoes and essential vegetables.
She insisted that the prosperity and development of Punjab is linked to the welfare of farmers.
Farmers whose names are registered in the land registry can apply for this program till December 31, 2024.
It has also been disclosed that the Punjab government will offer subsidies for the solarization of tube wells in three distinct categories:
Farmers will be responsible for covering the remaining costs. Interested farmers can reach out to the agriculture helpline at 0800-17000 for further information.
