LAHORE: The Punjab government has just launched its first electric bus service, “Electro,” in Lahore, and it’s a game-changer for public transport in the city.
This service will connect remote areas with the central precincts, easing the commute for residents. The project with 27 electric buses and 98 bus stops under construction is destined to dramatically change and improve travel in Lahore.
Buses will travel from Lahore Railway Station and Green Town, thereby touching on all important points of the city such as prime business, educational, and residential areas.
This extensive route will pass through especially busy spots, including Shimla Pahari, Governor House, and Bagh-e-Jinnah, but even the Lahore Zoo, Charing Cross, and Ganga Ram Hospital.
It will greatly help out students, office workers, and visitors to hospitals. Route for students going to Punjab College, Punjab University, Hailey College, and other known institutions will also be extended for easy access to jobs, schools, or universities.
The bus rates are affordable at Rs.20 per ride. Moreover, students and physically challenged people will be able to travel freely, which is a great initiative by the government.
All the buses are equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity, mobile charging ports, and CCTV cameras, to ensure connectivity and safety during travel.
The second phase envisages the launching of 500 electrical buses after Lahore, extending the service to Faisalabad and Gujranwala. The first-ever tram service in Punjab is also likely to come into operation.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is even exploring the possibility of an underground transport system for Lahore, which would be a very ambitious and potentially transformative venture.
