KARACHI: The Sindh Moorat March is scheduled for the 24th of November at Rani Bagh Theater in Hyderabad from 3 pm to 9 pm. The idea behind this event is to highlight the rights of the transgender community through various cultural activities like dance, and drama.
In this regard, a press conference was held on Monday at the Karachi Press Club where transgender rights activist Bindia Rana, City Councillor Shahzadi Rai, and other eminent personalities were present.
At the occasion of the press meeting, Shahzadi Rai declared that the Sindh Moorat March is the first political movement of transgender which got started two years back and is continuing.
She condemned the injustice meted out to transgender who are victims of savage killings stating that these cases are usually closed by giving qisas to the family of the deceased, and this is not right. Furthermore, she said, the families refuse them inheritance rights.
Rai lauded the Sindh government for its decision to formulate an education policy for transgender citizens and called for its swift implementation. She added that diseases such as gender dysphoria, transphobia, and the history of the transgender community must be included in the teaching syllabus so that respect for the transgender community is built in the new generation.
Rai expressed disappointment that although there is an allotment of 0.5% for the transgender category in government jobs, it is not being enforced.
At the time of the conference, Bindia Rana addressed the issue of stereotypes arguing that the transgender population does not accept injustice anymore and is asking for their equal rights and is being discriminated against in employment, housing, and medical care. She also asked the authorities to provide medicine for conditions other than HIV.
