Karachi: In a deeply disturbing event, an eight-year-old girl was reportedly set ablaze by her stepfather in the Landhi area of Karachi.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Korangi Hasan Sardar, a man named Tariq is accused of setting his stepdaughter, Vaniya, on fire on February 16.
The police revealed that the girl’s mother, Rabia, kept the incident hidden from authorities due to fear of her husband. Rabia sought medical treatment for her daughter at times from a private hospital and sometimes from the Civil Hospital.
As per the victim’s mother, she married Tariq two years ago, and she has an eight-year-old daughter from her previous marriage with Amjad, who resides with them. On the day of the incident, the daughter returned home from tuition, and Tariq allegedly began to physically assault her.
The mother intervened to protect her daughter, but Tariq, in a fit of rage, reportedly doused the girl in petrol and set her on fire. Fortunately, the girl was rescued, but now the mother claims to face threats of death from her husband.
