In a brief statement, the defence department said the chief of army staff (COAS) and Secretary Austin discussed the regional matters during a phone call. They also discussed areas of mutual interest between the two countries.

This is the second time that Gen Munir and the US secretary have spoken on the phone.

The last time they spoke was in January of this year, when the US defence secretary had called Gen Munir to congratulate him on taking charge as the army chief.

Pakistani authorities have blamed Afghanistan for allowing militants to use its soil, with interim Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti saying that 14 of 24 suicide bombings in the country this year were carried out by Afghan nationals.

The government, as a result of these activities, has ordered all illegal immigrants, including 1.73 million Afghan nationals, to leave the country or face expulsion.

According to a statistical report released by the independent think tank Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), at least 271 militant attacks took place during the first half of 2023, resulting in the loss of 389 lives and injuring 656 individuals.

Terror activities in the country soared by 79% during the period.

Security personnel involved in ‘cross-border smuggling to face court martial’

Caretaker Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti said Monday that any personnel of security forces found involved in cross-border smuggling would be court-martialed.

The government has intensified its crackdown on smugglers involved in transporting commodities and dollars to Afghanistan, especially in the last few months when havoc was wreaked on the already weakening economy.

The crackdown bore fruit as speculation diminished and the rupee recovered sharply against the greenback to become the best-performing currency globally, but analysts fear another round of depreciation as they are sceptical about the long-term effects of administrative measures.

“If I say that security forces weren’t involved in [smuggling], it won’t be right as the [smuggled] items are transported via trucks, not camels,” Bugti said during a press conference in Islamabad.

He said that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir had told military personnel that whoever is found involved in illegal cross-border trade would face the music.

“Pakistan’s army chief had told his people very clearly: there won’t only be court-martials, but those involved in such activities would also be sent to jail,” the security czar added.

Bugti told reporters that the army’s accountability mechanism is not made public and that’s why it is not in the knowledge of the masses. “But the army has its own accountability [system], and we have not just seen it in this instance, but post-May 9 as well.”

‘Iron fist’

The minister mentioned that the government was taking action against smugglers and that they were also appreciating law enforcers for their part in the crackdown on the people involved in illegal activities.

“The state will deal with hawala, hundi, and other illegal activities with an iron fist,” he said.

He said the authorities had recovered 8,000 metric tonnes of sugar, and action was also being taken against petrol pump stations for selling sub-standard fuel.

The minister said a database was being made of the trucks being used in smuggling.

Bugti said the government strongly discourages the usage of hawal and hundi. He mentioned that 168 FIRs have been registered against people involved in the dollar’s illegal trade.

‘Nawaz’s return to politics encouraging’

The minister, in the same presser, mentioned that if Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif plans to return to the country and partake in politics, it would be “encouraging”.

“I am still saying, despite what PML-N leaders have said about me, that Nawaz Sharif is the leader who came back to the country with his daughter; if he was afraid of going to jail, he would not have come back.”

The interim interior minister claimed that the government has to treat every Pakistani citizen in line with the law and the same would be done with Nawaz, a three-time prime minister.

Bugti had invited strong criticism from the top PML-N leadership when he said that if Nawaz was not granted bail, then the authorities would arrest the former PM from the airport.

After hard-hitting statements from the PML-N leaders, the minister said his “statement was given a political colour out of context. The caretaker government has no political agenda”.

“Such incidents of terrorism on 12 Rabi al-Awwal depict the ill intent of the khawarij, who have the backing of state sponsors of terrorism,” the army chief said, according to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The ISPR mentioned that the army chief visited Quetta, where he was briefed on recent terrorist attacks in Mastung and Zhob.

He also lauded the bravery and resilience of Balochistan police and law enforcement personnel.

He assured full cooperation and support to the families of martyred people and assured them that terrorists, their abettors, and facilitators would not be spared.

The death toll from the suicide blast in Mastung rose to 59, a spokesperson of the Civil Hospital Quetta said Saturday, as seven more succumbed to their injuries.

Hours after the blast in Balochistan, a second attack took place at a mosque in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Hangu city and claimed the lives of five people — including a policeman — and injured 12.

The incident took place within the parametres of Police Station Doaba during the Friday sermon — a time when scores of believers are gathered at a mosque for their weekly prayer.

Bugti said earlier today that the Indian intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), is involved in carrying out terror incidents in Pakistan.

The minister, in a press conference in Quetta, said that the authorities knew who was involved in these activities and would avenge every drop of blood of Pakistanis.

“We know who is doing it and from where,” Bugti maintained, vowing to utilise all state resources against militants.

A day earlier, a delegation of Lahore Chambers of Commerce and Industries headed by its President Kashif Anwar called on COAS General Asim Munir to discuss the country’s economic situation.

COAS General Asim Munir assured the business community that money exchanges would be brought under the purview of taxation, said President Lahore Chambers of Commerce and Industries Kashif Anwar.

Detailing the matters discussed in the meeting, Anwar said the COAS assured transparency in dollar exchange and interbank rates.

During the meeting, General Asim Munir highlighted the pivotal role of Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), emphasising its potential to attract substantial investments of up to $100 billion from countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and others.

Anwar further said COAS General Asim is optimistic that Pakistan will come out of the present financial crisis as the country has the potential to bounce back.

Forex dealers would be brought under tax net, Gen Asim Munir assures businessmen

As the Pakistani rupee lost significant ground against the US dollar, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir has said that money exchanges would be brought under the tax net.

He stated this in a meeting with the business community at the Corps Commander’s Headquarters in Lahore on Sunday.

Gen Munir assured the businessmen that transparency in dollar exchange and interbank rates would be ensured.

A statement issued here by the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) stated that the association’s president Kashif Anwar, alongside prominent business figures, met the army chief and discussed the economic challenges facing the country.

Interim Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi was also present at the meeting.

General Munir highlighted the pivotal role of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), emphasising its potential to attract substantial investments of up to $100 billion from countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and others.

To bolster economic decision-making, he revealed the formation of task forces focused on economic matters and different sectors.

Kashif Anwar, in alignment with the broader business community, recommended active engagement with all chambers to incorporate diverse perspectives into the task force’s agenda.

Addressing critical issues faced by the public, the LCCI chief proposed a reduction in income and sales tax rates on electricity bills. He noted that the populace grapples with the burden of high taxation on electricity, impacting daily lives, businesses and common people.

He recommended a pragmatic approach to fuel adjustment charges, advocating for their collection during the winter months when electricity consumption is lower, alleviating financial stress on consumers.

Recognising the pivotal role of exchange rates in Pakistan’s economic landscape, Kashif Anwar urged for greater control over the rates of the US dollar in both interbank and open markets.

The LCCI president also pointed out that the disparity between the State Bank’s rate and the Hundi rate (illegal money exchange business) often leads to a preference for Hundi channels when it comes to remittances. He emphasised that if these rates were aligned, remittances would naturally flow through the SBP.

Anwaz emphasised the importance of an enhanced and sustained interactive dialogue between the business community and relevant authorities. He expressed concerns over the prevailing lack of responsiveness to suggestions put forth by the business sector.

Furthermore, Anwar called for a unified commitment from political parties, suggesting the signing of a charter of economy as a precondition before any upcoming elections.

Expanding on the army chief’s earlier remarks regarding the existence of a grey economy, accounting for two to three times of the overall documented economy, he proposed an innovative approach. He recommended incentivising the grey economy sector to transition into the formal, white economy, offering a strategic solution to combat this pervasive issue.

The LCCI chief said that the expansion of the tax base will remain elusive as long as the grey economy remains unincorporated, unable to contribute to the formal white economy.

This gathering exemplified the shared dedication of both the business community and the military leadership to work collaboratively in addressing pressing economic challenges and propelling the nation toward growth.

As Pakistan continues to navigate economic complexities, this constructive dialogue signifies a promising step towards finding practical solutions and fostering economic prosperity for the nation.
