Pakistan sees surge in honey traps and online extortion cases

ISLAMABAD: The National Cyber Emergency Response Team has warned of a rising trend in cybercrime spreading through social media in Pakistan.

The advisory cites a notable uptick in online honey traps, extortion cases, and bogus freelance job offers.

The online fraud targets individuals through WhatsApp and Telegram, offering them fake job offers and freelance opportunities.

Scammers include the affected people in the group without their consent and lure them under the guise of freelancing jobs.

Once in the group, users are exposed to inappropriate or explicit content, and those who react or do not react are blackmailed with threats of being reported.

The cyber team reports that these frauds have resulted in extortion demands of Rs1 million to Rs1.5 million from victims in Pakistan.

Scammers are claimed to utilize WhatsApp display photos, identities, and internet behavior to choose and target specific individuals. The alert stated that fake accounts are used to establish contact and influence people by making fraudulent employment offers.

The recommendation strongly advises the public to be wary of unsolicited employment offers, alter group privacy settings on messaging applications, and refrain from transmitting or downloading unethical information.

It also cautions avoiding responding to demands to delete undesirable content.
