LONDON: The British government has imposed tougher rules on immigrants seeking permanent residency, introducing stricter conditions for settling in the country as the country deals with a large influx of immigrants.

At the Labour Party conference, Home Secretary Suella Braverman said the new rules are being designed to ensure that applicants can demonstrate that they are valued members of society before being granted permanent residency.

Under the current system, immigrants can apply for permanent residency after completing five years in the UK. The Labour Party has proposed extending this period to ten years. Once approved, permanent residents will have the right to live, study and work in the UK indefinitely.

Applicants will also need to meet additional conditions, including achieving a high standard of English, maintaining a clean criminal record, and taking part in voluntary community work.

The Home Secretary added that the government is considering only allowing people who have a documented record of volunteering in their communities to apply. A formal consultation on the proposals is expected to begin later this year.

According to the Migration Observatory, there are around 4.5 million permanent residents in the UK, including around 430,000 non-EU nationals.

The government’s move marks a tightening of immigration rules, reflecting its focus on integration, community engagement and security as key factors for permanent settlement.
