NEW YORK: (Rizwan Abbasi) The 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly has begun, with Secretary-General António Guterres delivering a fiery critique of the current global system, calling for immediate and effective reforms. Guterres warned that without urgent action, global security and development could face unprecedented dangers.

Addressing world leaders, Guterres stated, “We are at a critical turning point. The Security Council and international financial systems no longer reflect today’s realities, and their credibility is at risk.” He stressed that if the global community fails to take decisive steps to meet the challenges of the 21st century, the entire international system may collapse.

The Secretary-General highlighted the growing threats posed by nuclear weapons and deepening geopolitical divisions, urging world leaders to ensure more inclusive representation for Africa, the Asia-Pacific, and Latin America in the UN Security Council.

Guterres also underscored the importance of initiatives like the “Pact for the Future” and the “Global Digital Compact,” which aim to pave the way for much-needed global reforms. With eyes on the UN, the question now is whether the world’s most significant international body can rise to the occasion and implement these vital changes—or face irrelevance in the face of global crises.
