WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has launched a new website through which foreign nationals can express their interest in a ‘Gold Card’.
The card will provide a special path to US citizenship, provided the applicant pays the US government $5 million.
Trump made the announcement on his social media platform ‘Truth Social’ ‘ saying that “For $5 million, the Trump Card is coming! Thousands of people are calling asking how they can enter the greatest country and market in the world.”
The ‘Trump Card’ is a special residency permit that first appeared in April. It features Trump’s image and the phrase ‘The Trump Card’. According to Trump, the card will likely replace the current EB-5 visa program, through which foreign investors can obtain US citizenship.
Unlike the EB-5 visa, which requires an investment of $800,000 to $1.05 million, the Trump Card is priced at a mere $5 million. He says the cards could sell in the millions, helping to pay down U.S. debt.
The website only allows for initial registration, which asks for name, region, email address and whether the applicant is applying for themselves or for a business.
The website is accepting registrations from eight different global regions: ‘Europe, Asia (including the Middle East), North America, Oceania, Central America, South America, the Caribbean and Africa.’
The website https://trumpcard.gov/ states that it is currently only accepting registrations, and that registered individuals will be notified first when regular applications open.
Donald Trump has indicated that the card will be for investors who create jobs in the US and want to obtain citizenship legally. He says even Russian billionaires could be eligible for the card.
