GALLE (Reuters): An Iranian warship has sunk off the coast of \u200bSri Lanka<\/a>, with the Sri Lankan authorities saying on \u200cWednesday they had rescued 32 people who were on board and recovered several bodies from the sea.<\/div>\n

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath told parliament \u200bthat the ship, identified as IRIS Dena, had sunk.<\/div>\n

Sources in \u200bSri Lanka’s navy and defence ministry said the vessel \u2060had been attacked by a submarine, and at least 101 \u200bpeople were missing in the incident that took place off \u200bSri Lanka’s Indian Ocean coast.<\/div>\n

The defence sources said it was unclear who attacked the ship. A Sri Lankan navy spokesman said the report of 101 people being missing \u200bwas not true and rejected any reports on the cause of \u200bthe ship sinking.<\/div>\n

The spokesman said 32 people injured in the incident had been \u200crescued \u2060by the Sri Lankan navy and were under treatment at a state-run hospital in the southern port city of Galle.<\/div>\n

The navy received a distress call from an Iranian ship and informed the Sri Lankan air \u200bforce, and both \u200blaunched a \u2060search and rescue operation, the spokesman said.<\/div>\n

Sri Lankan forces were focused on saving lives on \u200bthe Iranian ship and will investigate the cause \u200bof the \u2060incident later, he said.<\/div>\n
