Iran FM warns US<\/strong> after an Iranian naval frigate was sunk near Sri Lanka, causing heavy casualties among sailors.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi<\/strong> strongly criticised the United States. He said the attack happened in international waters and warned Washington it would \u201cbitterly regret\u201d the precedent set.<\/p>\n

The incident involved the Iranian navy frigate IRIS Dena<\/strong>, which sank off the southern coast of Sri Lanka near the city of Galle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Dozens of sailors killed and missing<\/h3>\n

Sri Lankan authorities said the attack killed at least 87 sailors<\/strong>, while 61 others are still missing<\/strong>. Rescue teams are continuing search operations in the area.<\/p>\n

Sri Lanka\u2019s navy confirmed that 32 sailors were rescued<\/strong>, many of them injured. They were taken to hospitals in Galle for treatment.<\/p>\n

Officials said the ship had nearly 130 crew members<\/strong> onboard when it was struck.<\/p>\n

US confirms submarine torpedo attack<\/h3>\n

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth<\/strong> confirmed that an American submarine fired a torpedo that sank the Iranian warship.<\/p>\n

He told reporters in Washington that the attack marked the first time since World War II<\/strong> that the United States had sunk an enemy vessel using a torpedo.<\/p>\n

Hegseth described the strike as a \u201cquiet death\u201d<\/strong> operation and said the United States was acting to win the ongoing conflict.<\/p>\n

Ship sank before rescue teams arrived<\/h3>\n

Sri Lankan navy officials said the ship sent a distress call at dawn<\/strong>. However, by the time rescue vessels reached the location about an hour later, the frigate had already sunk.<\/p>\n

Only an oil patch<\/strong> was visible on the sea surface when rescue teams arrived.<\/p>\n

Sri Lankan navy divers later recovered dozens of bodies<\/strong> from the water near Galle.<\/p>\n

Tensions rising in the Middle East<\/h3>\n

The sinking comes during growing regional tensions after joint US-Israel strikes on Iran<\/strong>, which have expanded the conflict across the Middle East.<\/p>\n

Iranian officials say the attack on IRIS Dena happened while the ship was travelling far from Iran\u2019s shores and posed no immediate threat.<\/p>\n
