{"id":109105,"date":"2026-04-22T18:36:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T13:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/?p=109105"},"modified":"2026-04-22T18:36:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T13:36:18","slug":"uk-okays-bill-to-ban-smoking-for-future-generations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/health\/uk-okays-bill-to-ban-smoking-for-future-generations\/","title":{"rendered":"UK okays bill to ban smoking for future generations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON: Both houses of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/world\/pakistans-role-in-us-iran-ceasefire-talks-praised-in-uk-parliament\/\">UK Parliament<\/a> have approved the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, a landmark measure that will ban anyone aged 17 or under from legally purchasing cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation targets people born on or after 1 January 2009, with the aim of creating the UK\u2019s first smoke-free generation.<\/p>\n<p>Once it receives royal assent, the bill will become law and significantly reshape tobacco control policies across the country.<\/p>\n<p>UK Health Secretary Wes Strating called the move a \u201chistoric moment\u201d for public health, saying it would protect future generations from addiction and long-term harm.<\/p>\n<p>The bill also gives the government powers to extend the ban on indoor smoking to certain outdoor areas, including playgrounds and places near schools and hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>It also introduces stricter regulations on vaping, including limits on flavours, packaging, and use in smoke-free areas.<\/p>\n<p>The move is part of a wider effort to strengthen preventive healthcare and reduce long-term pressure on the National Health Service.<\/p>\n<p>Public health experts have welcomed the development. Hazel Cheeseman, from Action on Smoking and Health, called it a \u201cgame-changer\u201d in tackling the harms of smoking.<\/p>\n<p>Smoking remains a major health problem in England, causing around 75,000 deaths a year and accounting for around a quarter of all deaths, according to NHS figures.<\/p>\n<p>Similar measures have been introduced globally.
