A 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Tajikistan on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said.<\/p>\n<p>The quake struck around 5:37 am local time (0037 GMT) at a depth of about 20.5 kilometres (12.7 miles).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A dangerous earthquake are happened near Tajikistan-China border. <br \/>May ALLAH protect all the people.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/China?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#China<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Tajikistan?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Tajikistan<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/IbVvlN0zRC\">pic.twitter.com\/IbVvlN0zRC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Aizaz Marwat (@MarwatAizaz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarwatAizaz\/status\/1628690882760257536?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 23, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The USGS estimated that &#8220;little or no population&#8221; would be exposed to landslides from the quake.<\/p>\n<p>Its epicentre appeared to be in Gorno-Badakhshan, a semi-autonomous eastern region that borders Afghanistan and China, about 67 kilometres from the small mountain town of Murghob.<\/p>\n<p>A 5.0-magnitude aftershock hit the area about 20 minutes after the initial quake, followed by a 4.6-magnitude quake.<\/p>\n<p>The sparsely populated territory is surrounded by the towering Pamir Mountains and is home to Lake Sarez.<\/p>\n<p>The aquamarine-coloured body of water \u2014 formed as a result of an earthquake in 1911 \u2014 is among Tajikistan&#8217;s largest lakes.<\/p>\n<p>Located behind Lake Sarez is a natural dam deep in the Pamir mountains, and experts have warned the consequences will be catastrophic if the dam is breached.<\/p>\n<p>Tajikistan \u2014 like much of the rest of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Central_Asia\">Central Asia<\/a> \u2014 is highly prone to natural disasters and has a long history of floods, earthquakes, landslides, avalanches and heavy snowfalls.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, nine people died in a February 15 avalanche in Gorno-Badakhshan, while another person was killed the same day in an avalanche on a highway near the capital Dushanbe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>6.8-magnitude quake hits eastern Tajikistan: USGS.
