ECP had proposed poll date between 30 April to 7 May 2023 for holding general elections of Provincial Assembly of Punjab, and had further suggested to hold elections preferably on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; The President of Pakistan (@PresOfPakistan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PresOfPakistan\/status\/1631609879327657986?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 3, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Dr Alvi&#8217;s office said that the decision was made by president after &#8220;considering the dates proposed by the Election Commission of Pakistan&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier today the ECP, in its letter to President Alvi, had recommended that the polls for the provincial assembly in Punjab can be held between April 30 \u2014 May 07.<\/p>\n<p>The Election Commission met today \u2014 the third consecutive meeting \u2014 with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja in the chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe commission is ready to fulfil its Constitutional and legal obligations after the selection of a date by the president,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Read more:<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/imran-khan-suspends-jail-bharo-tehreek-after-sc-ruling.html\">Imran Khan suspends \u2018Jail Bharo Tehreek\u2019 after SC ruling<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, in its letter to Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ghulam Ali, the letter said the commission is waiting for his response in light of the SC order.<\/p>\n<p>The Punjab and KP assemblies were dissolved on January 14 and January 18 respectively, and under the law, the elections were to be held within 90 days after their dissolution.<\/p>\n<p>However, after the governors&#8217; refusal to fix a date for polls, the issue landed in the Supreme Court which directed the president to announce the election date in consultation with the commission.<\/p>\n<p>It also ordered the KP governor to give an election date.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Step in the right direction\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had welcomed the development and appreciated the ECP for taking a \u201cstep in the right direction\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a video statement, senior PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said, \u201cThe Supreme Court, in its order, had allowed the president and the ECP to go beyond the 90-day time limit but had used the word bare minimum.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"ur\" dir=\"rtl\">\u0627\u0644\u06cc\u06a9\u0634\u0646 \u06a9\u0645\u06cc\u0634\u0646 \u06a9\u06d2 \u0627\u0646\u062a\u062e\u0627\u0628\u0627\u062a \u06a9\u06cc \u062a\u0627\u0631\u06cc\u062e \u062f\u06cc\u0646\u06d2 \u067e\u0631 \u062a\u062d\u0631\u06cc\u06a9 \u0627\u0646\u0635\u0627\u0641 \u06a9\u0627 \u0631\u062f \u0639\u0645\u0644 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FXgNiQVQd7\">pic.twitter.com\/FXgNiQVQd7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ch Fawad Hussain (@fawadchaudhry) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fawadchaudhry\/status\/1631592599784914944?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 3, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think that the ECP has taken a step in the right direction and the president now will announce a date for polls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Congratulating the nation over the development, Fawad said it is a victory for PTI and the nation and the Constitution of Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Supreme Court order<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The apex court had noted in its verdict, on March 1, that in &#8220;ordinary circumstances&#8221; the polls should have been held on April 9 as announced by the president.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, we are informed that on account of the delay in the emergence of the date for the holding of the general election, it may not be possible to meet the 90-day deadline stipulated by the Constitution. It is also the case that (possibly on account of a misunderstanding of the law) the Election Commission did not make itself available for consultation as required under Section 57(1) of the 2017 Act,&#8221; read the court order.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Election Commission is therefore directed to use its utmost efforts to immediately propose, keeping in mind Sections 57 and 58 of the 2017 Act, a date to the President that is compliant with the aforesaid deadline. If such a course is not available, then the Election Commission shall in like manner propose a date for the holding of the poll that deviates to the barest minimum from the aforesaid deadline.
