Maleeka Bokhari joins long list of PTI deserters. Maleeka Bokhari, a former parliamentarian, Thursday announced quitting the Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), joining a long list of leaders to desert the party following the May 9 riots.<\/p>\n

\u201cI condemn the events that transpired on May 9. For every Pakistani, the events that took place on May 9 are very painful,\u201d the former member of the National Assembly<\/a> said in a press conference in Islamabad.<\/p>\n

Announcing her \u201cdissociation\u201d from the party, Bokhari said she wasn\u2019t under duress and \u201cno one forced me into making this decision\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a lawyer, I want to play a positive role in Pakistan. I also want to spend time with my family,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Bokhari quit the party hours after her release from Adiala Jail, where she was sent after being arrested under Section 4 of the Maintenance of Public Order.<\/p>\n

Separately, PTI Senator Mohammad Abdul Qadir also announced his exit from the party as he condemned the May 9 riots and the attack on the Jinnah House. “I will sit as an independent member instead of sitting in the PTI’s benches in the Senate from now on,” he announced.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, former Punjab Assembly members from Bahawalnagar \u2014 Mumtaz Ahmad Maharvi and Asif Manzoor Mohal \u2014 also joined the list of those quitting the former ruling party. Mohal termed May 9 the “darkest day in Pakistan’s history”.<\/p>\n

Khan\u2019s party has been feeling the heat of the state\u2019s might after his party workers burnt and smashed military installations, including the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, after his arrest on May 9 \u2014 a day the army dubbed as \u201cBlack Day\u201d.<\/p>\n

Several party leaders and thousands of workers have been rounded up in connection with the violent protests and the army has insisted that the people involved in attacks on military installations be tried under the Pakistan Army Act and the Official Secrets Act.<\/p>\n

A close aide of Khan, Asad Umar, has relinquished his posts of secretary general and core committee member, citing the ongoing situation.<\/p>\n

Several party leaders and lawmakers \u2014 including Shireen Mazari, Aamir Mehmood Kiani, Malik Amin Aslam, Mahmood Moulvi, Aftab Siddiqui, Fayyazul Hassan Chohan among others \u2014 have publicly denounced the attacks on the state installations and announced leaving the former ruling party since the May 9 vandalism.<\/p>\n

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said the federal government was considering imposing a ban on the PTI after receiving evidence that the party\u2019s supporters carried out \u201cpre-planned\u201d and \u201ccoordinated\u201d attacks on public properties and military installations.<\/p>\n

In her presser, Bokhari backed the authorities\u2019 decision to investigate the May 9 events and said the people behind the violent events should be punished.<\/p>\n
