{"id":18641,"date":"2023-08-15T18:46:40","date_gmt":"2023-08-15T13:46:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/?p=18641"},"modified":"2023-08-15T18:46:40","modified_gmt":"2023-08-15T13:46:40","slug":"parvez-elahi-remanded-into-nabs-custody-till-august-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/parvez-elahi-remanded-into-nabs-custody-till-august-21\/","title":{"rendered":"Parvez Elahi remanded into NAB&#8217;s custody till August 21"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An accountability court in Lahore Tuesday handed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Chaudhry Parvez Elahi over to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) till August 21 in a case of receiving bribes from development project contracts.<\/p>\n<p>The former Punjab chief minister \u2014 who has been detained back-to-back \u2014 was arrested yet again by NAB officials shortly after being released from Rawalpindi\u2019s Adiala jail on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>However, as soon as the PTI president walked free, the NAB officials apprehended him and presented him before Judicial Magistrate Khalid Hayat to seek his transitory remand.<\/p>\n<p>Today the NAB officials, whose request for the transitory remand was accepted last night, presented Elahi before a Lahore court.<\/p>\n<p>The accountability court judge, Zubair Shehzad Kiyani, presided over the hearing in Lahore.<\/p>\n<p>During the hearing, Special Prosecutor Waris Janjua sought Elahi&#8217;s 14-day physical remand on NAB&#8217;s behalf. He informed the court that a supplementary grant of Rs72 billion was issued for specific sectors of Gujrat under Elahi as Punjab CM.<\/p>\n<p>Others facing charges in the same case have been remanded, he added.<\/p>\n<p>At this, the court approved a seven-day physical remand \u2014 half as requested by the prosecution \u2014 of Elahi, who sought permission to meet his wife and son.<\/p>\n<p>However, the court directed NAB to submit a response to the PTI president&#8217;s plea.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Read more:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/pakistan\/pti-sacks-pervez-khattak-for-asking-workers-to-quit-former-ruling-party.html\">PTI sacks Pervez Khattak for asking workers to quit former ruling party<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Elahi was initially arrested on June 1 from outside his residence in an Rs70 million graft case related to the embezzlement of development funds allocated for the Gujrat district.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the former Punjab chief minister has been behind bars on various charges. During a span of around two and half months, the PTI leader was released multiple times on the courts\u2019 orders but was re-arrested immediately every time.<\/p>\n<p>The PTI president was taken into custody during a crackdown launched against the party\u2019s leadership following the May 9 riots.<\/p>\n<p>The riots were triggered almost across the country after the PTI chairman\u2019s arrest in the \u00a3190 million Al-Qadir Trust case on May 9 which led to the deaths of at least eight people and injured several others, prompting the authorities to arrest thousands of PTI workers.<\/p>\n<p>During the protests, the miscreants attacked the civil and military installations including \u2014 Corps Commander&#8217;s House (Jinnah House) in Lahore Cantt and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.<\/p>\n<p>The military called May 9 &#8220;Black Day&#8221; and decided to try the protesters under the Army Act.
