The nation on Monday commemorated the services of prominent philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi on his third death anniversary.<\/p>\n
The iconic humanitarian was born on February 28, 1928, in Gujarat before the partition of the sub-continent. He breathed his last on July 8, 2016, at the age of 88 in Karachi.<\/p>\n
Edhi started welfare services in 1951 and later established the world\u2019s largest volunteer ambulance network along with homeless shelters, animal shelters and orphanages across the country.<\/p>\n
In a nation driven by social, ethnic and religious strife, Edhi won respect from every stratum of society for an\u00a0ascetic\u00a0lifestyle that was devoted to helping the poor regardless of their background.<\/p>\n
Edhi lived in a bare room in Karachi, alternating\u00a0between his two suits of black clothes and occasionally listening to recordings of Quranic verses on a battered old tape recorder.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen my ambulance takes a wounded person who is in pain to the hospital, when people reach the hospital, I find peace in knowing I helped an injured person who was in pain,\u201d Edhi told\u00a0Reuters<\/em>\u00a0in an interview in 2013.<\/p>\n \u201cMy mission is to love human beings \u2026 Each day is the best day of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n Edhi was well-known for bashing militant\u00a0groups such as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for their attacks on civilians, criticising the government for incompetence and corruption and denouncing the elites for dodging taxes.<\/p>\n His wife, Bilquis, a nurse, oversees the women\u2019s shelters and the adoption of orphans.
