ISLAMABAD: The nation observes today, the 16th anniversary of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto’s tragic death, with solemnity and respect.<\/p>\n

Observing this momentous occasion, Sindh has proclaimed a public holiday.<\/p>\n

The nation is filled with heartfelt prayers to start the day, which are then followed by a number of memorial activities like vigils, conferences, and seminars that highlight Benazir Bhutto’s ongoing struggle.<\/p>\n

In Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has painstakingly planned the main event, which is a large public gathering.<\/p>\n

Party flags and posters honoring Benazir and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, as well as an elaborate stage for the PPP’s top leadership, are part of the event’s preparations.<\/p>\n

Speakers at the public gathering include Asif Ali Zardari, the former president of the PPP and co-chair, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, as well as other key party figures.<\/p>\n

Security measures are paramount for the occasion, with approximately 8,000 police personnel, including women officers, deployed to ensure law and order.<\/p>\n

The security apparatus comprises the Bomb Disposal Squad, bomb detectors, scanning machines, jammers, watchtowers, walk-through gates, and police vehicles. Sindh Police officials will monitor these arrangements closely.<\/p>\n

Benazir Bhutto was born in Karachi’s Pinto Hospital on June 21, 1953. Her family was a well-known political family in Sindh. She was the oldest of four siblings and the daughter of PPP founder Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto’s granddaughter. Popular girl Benazir went on to study at Oxford University, where she became a leader among her peers.<\/p>\n

Her political journey began in 1977 when she bravely opposed her father’s arrest under General Zia’s dictatorship.<\/p>\n

Following her long exile in the name of democracy, Benazir returned to the country in 1986. She went on to become the first Muslim woman prime minister when she won the 1988 general elections.<\/p>\n

On December 27, 2007, Benazir Bhutto gave a speech at a sizable public gathering in Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi, which marked the tragic turn of events.<\/p>\n

During her passionate speech, the glow on her face reflected the fiery spirit of her father. Unfortunately, while she was acknowledging her supporters’ chants from the sunroof of her car on the way back, a terrorist attack occurred, resulting in her death.<\/p>\n
