ISLAMABAD: Social media users are questioning the pin-drop silence of Indian prime minister Narendra Modi after the seizure of 3,000 kilogrammes of heroin worth Rs210 billion ($3 billion) from the Mundra Port in Gujarat, operated by his friend and financier Gautam Adani.
\nIn the biggest-ever single drug haul in India, the heroin was shipped via two containers from Afghanistan to the port operated by the Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited, according to the Hindustan Times.
\nGautam Adani, who hails from Modi\u2019s constituency Gujarat, owns nearly one-fourth of the cargo movement in the country and manages 13 domestic ports in seven maritime states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Odisha.
\nThe information regarding the 25% share of Narendra Modi in the port raised many eyebrows, with fingers pointed at him for promoting drug smuggling in the country.
\nThe topic dominated social media conversations as politicians, civil society and journalists targeted Adani Group and the Modi government over the confiscation of the heroin from the Mundra port.
\nThe Congress attacked the Centre, asking how such a drug syndicate was operating in India \u201cunder the nose of the government\u201d as well as the Narcotics Control Bureau.
\n\u201cWhy is Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, who are from Gujarat, unable to break this drug syndicate,\u201d Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said at a press conference.
\nHe said smuggling of drugs into India had increased substantially in the last few years.
\n\u201cThis will not only destroy the future of the youth of India, but it is the potential funding route for terrorist organisations globally,\u201d he said.
\nBJP\u2019s Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy offered to file a Public Interest Litigation after the capture of heroin, which according to the experts of Gandhi Nagar Central Forensic Science Laboratory, was found to be of \u201cvery high quality\u201d.
\nLeader of Telugu Desam Party, Dhulipalla Narendra Kumar at a presser said it was a \u201cshame\u201d for India to be emerging as the epicentre of the contraband mafia.
\n\u201cHow is it possible for the international drug and uranium mafia to operate in Andhra Pradesh (Indian State) without the support of the government and top police officers,\u201d he asked.
\nThe Adani Group, in a clarification, said it was only a port operator and did not have the authority to check shipments arriving at the port.
