{"id":3694,"date":"2021-11-04T11:52:15","date_gmt":"2021-11-04T11:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/?p=3694"},"modified":"2021-11-04T11:52:15","modified_gmt":"2021-11-04T11:52:15","slug":"death-toll-in-nigeria-building-collapse-rises-to-36","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/world\/death-toll-in-nigeria-building-collapse-rises-to-36\/","title":{"rendered":"Death toll in Nigeria building collapse rises to 36"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMABAD: The death toll from the collapse of a high-rise building in an upscale area of Nigeria\u2019s commercial capital Lagos has risen to 36, as rescue operations enter the fourth day.<br \/>\nThe 21-storey building under construction in the Ikoyi district of Lagos crumbled on Monday afternoon, trapping dozens of people working on the site.<br \/>\n\u201cSo far, 36 people \u2013 33 males and three female \u2013 have been confirmed dead, while there were nine survivors,\u201d Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, general manager of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, told the AFP news agency on Thursday.<br \/>\nThe number of people present on the site at the time of the collapse is still unknown.<br \/>\nIbrahim Farinloye, of the National Emergency Management Agency, said rescuers \u201cwon\u2019t give up until we reach ground zero\u201d, adding that bigger equipment was brought in Tuesday evening for the operation.<br \/>\nTwo other smaller buildings in Lagos also collapsed on Tuesday following heavy rains, though no one was killed, Farinloye said.<br \/>\nDistraught families and friends of people trapped in the rubble have been waiting for days outside the scene as rescue operations unfold. Some expressed anger and frustration over their inability to know the fate of their relatives.<br \/>\nAbel Godwin travelled 722km (449 miles) from the nation\u2019s capital, Abuja, in search of his 18-year-old son who had been employed at the site.<br \/>\nAfter arriving in Lagos at 2am, he visited the government hospital where victims are being treated.<br \/>\n\u201cThey couldn\u2019t allow me to check whether my son is alive or dead,\u201d he told an International News Organization.<br \/>\nThe cause of the incident has yet to be established, but building collapses are common in Africa\u2019s most populous country. Poor workmanship and materials and a lack of official oversight are often blamed.<br \/>\nLagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said on Wednesday the incident was a \u201cterrible national disaster\u201d, admitting that \u201cmistakes were made\u201d.<br \/>\nHe said he was setting up an independent panel to investigate the causes of the collapse and prevent similar incidents in the future.<br \/>\n\u201cPeople are indeed upset, people are angry.
