BLANTYRE: An aircraft carrying Malawi’s Vice-President Saulos Chilima and nine others has gone missing<\/a>, a statement from the president’s office said late on Monday.<\/p>\n

In the latest update, reported by BBC\u00a0<\/em>citing\u00a0President Lazarus Chakwera, the wreck of a plane carrying Malawi’s vice president has been found with no survivors.<\/p>\n

In a news briefing on Tuesday, President Chakwera said the Malawi Defence Force commander informed him that the search and rescue operation had been completed and the plane was found.<\/p>\n

Saulos Chilima and nine others were flying within the country on Monday morning when their aircraft disappeared from airport radars. The plane, a military aircraft, was flying in bad weather. Soldiers had been searching Chikangawa Forest overnight and into the morning in an effort to find the plane.<\/p>\n

Chilima, 51, was aboard a military aircraft with nine others that left Lilongwe, the capital, at 09:17 a.m. (0717 GMT), Malawi\u2019s Office of the President and Cabinet said in an earlier statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It said efforts by aviation authorities to make contact with the aircraft since it went off the radar had failed. The plane had been scheduled to land at Mzuzu Airport at 10:02 a.m.<\/p>\n

The plane was unable to land at the airport due to poor visibility and was ordered to return to the capital, President Lazarus Chakwera said in a televised address to the nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m holding on to every fiber of hope that we\u2019ll find survivors,\u201d he said, adding that the search area was concentrated around a 10 km (6 mile) radius in a forest reserve. \u201cI have given strict orders that the operation should continue until the plane is found.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said Malawi had reached out to neighboring countries, and the U.S., Britain, Norway, and the Israeli governments for support in the rescue efforts.<\/p>\n

Chilima, seen as a potential candidate in next year\u2019s presidential election, was arrested in 2022 over graft allegations. However, a Malawi court dropped the corruption charges against him last month after the director of public prosecutions filed a notice for the case to be discontinued.
