A widespread <\/span>Microsoft outage in the Crowdstrike<\/a> disrupted flights, banks, media outlets, and companies worldwide<\/span>\u00a0on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Escalating disruptions continued hours after the technology company said it was gradually fixing an issue affecting access to Microsoft 365 apps and services.<\/span><\/p>\n

The website DownDectector<\/a>, which tracks user-reported internet outages, recorded growing outages in services at Visa, ADT security <\/span>Amazon, and airlines including American Airlines and Delta.<\/span><\/p>\n

News outlets in Australia reported that airlines, telecommunications providers\u00a0<\/span>banks, and media broadcasters were disrupted as they lost access to computer systems. Some\u00a0New Zealand\u00a0banks said they were also offline.<\/span><\/p>\n

Microsoft 365 posted on X that the company was \u201cworking on rerouting the impacted traffic to alternate systems to alleviate impact more expediently<\/span>\u201d and that they were \u201cobserving a positive trend in service availability.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The company did not respond to a request for comment. It did not explain the cause of the outage further.<\/span><\/p>\n

Airports, railways<\/span> hit<\/h2>\n

Meanwhile, major disruptions reported by airlines and airports grew. <\/span>In the U.S., the FAA said the airlines United, American, Delta, <\/span>and<\/span> Allegiant had all been grounded.<\/span><\/p>\n

Airlines, railways, <\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0television\u00a0stations in the United Kingdom were being disrupted by the computer issues. The budget airline Ryanair, train operators TransPennine Express and Govia Thameslink Railway, as well as broadcaster Sky News are among those affected.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re currently experiencing disruption across the network due to a global <\/span>third-party<\/span> IT outage which is out of our control,\u2019\u2019 Ryanair said. \u201cWe advise all passengers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before their scheduled departure time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Widespread problems were reported at Australian airports, where lines grew and some passengers were stranded as online check-in services and self-service booths were disabled. Passengers in Melbourne queued for more than an hour to <\/span>check in<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amsterdam\u2019s Schiphol Airport said on its website that the outage was having a \u201cmajor impact on flights\u201d to and from the busy European hub. The outage came on one of the busiest days of the year for the airport, at the start of many people\u2019s summer vacations.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Germany, Berlin Airport said Friday morning that \u201cdue to a technical fault, there will be delays in check-in.\u201d It said that flights were suspended until 10 a.m. (0800GMT), without giving details, the\u00a0<\/span>German<\/span> news agency <\/span>DPA<\/span> reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some US-bound flights had posted delays at Rome\u2019s Leonardo da Vinci airport, while others were unaffected.<\/span><\/p>\n

Australian\u00a0outages reported on the site included the <\/span>banks<\/span> NAB, Commonwealth <\/span>and<\/span> Bendigo, the Virgin Australia and Qantas airlines, and internet and phone providers such as Telstra.<\/span><\/p>\n

News outlets in Australia \u2014 including the ABC and Sky News \u2014 were unable to broadcast on their TV and radio channels, and reported sudden shutdowns of Windows-based computers.
