{"id":43843,"date":"2024-08-05T11:20:43","date_gmt":"2024-08-05T06:20:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/?p=43843"},"modified":"2024-08-05T11:20:43","modified_gmt":"2024-08-05T06:20:43","slug":"bangladesh-protesters-call-for-pm-hasinas-resignation-as-clashes-kills-91-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/world\/bangladesh-protesters-call-for-pm-hasinas-resignation-as-clashes-kills-91-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Bangladesh protesters call for PM Hasina&#8217;s resignation as clashes kills 91 people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">DHAKA (Reuters): At least 91 people were killed and hundreds injured in clashes in Bangladesh on Sunday as police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse tens of thousands of protesters calling for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The death toll, which includes at least 13 policemen, was the highest for a single day from any protests in Bangladesh&#8217;s recent history, surpassing the 67 deaths reported on July 19 when students took to the streets to demand the scrapping of\u00a0quotas\u00a0for government jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The government declared an indefinite nationwide curfew starting at 6 p.m. (1200 GMT) on Sunday, the first time it has taken such a step during the current protests that began last month. Nine others were killed in the district, where two lawmakers&#8217; homes were set on fire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At least 11 people, including two students and a ruling party leader, were killed and dozens injured amid fierce clashes in several places in the capital, Dhaka, police and witnesses said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">India&#8217;s foreign ministry urged its nationals not to travel to Bangladesh until further notice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bullet wounds<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Two construction workers were killed on their way to work and 30 injured in the central district of Munsiganj, during a three-way clash of protesters, police, and ruling party activists, witnesses said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;They were brought dead to the hospital with bullet wounds,&#8221; said Abu Hena Mohammad Jamal, the superintendent of the district hospital. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Police said they had not fired any live bullets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In the northeastern district of Pabna, at least three people were killed and 50 injured during a clash between protesters and activists of Hasina&#8217;s ruling Awami League party, witnesses said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Eight each in Feni and Lakshmipur, six in Narsingdi, five in Rangpur, four in Magura, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the rest in several other districts, hospital officials said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;An attack on a hospital is unacceptable,&#8221; said Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen after a group <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">vandalized<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a medical college hospital and set fire to vehicles, including an ambulance, in Dhaka.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At least four garment factories were set on fire in Ashulia, on the outskirts of Dhaka, police said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_43844\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43844\" style=\"width: 564px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-43844 \" src=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/5616.avif\" alt=\"\" width=\"564\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/5616.avif 620w, https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/5616-300x200.avif 300w, https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/5616.avif 620w, https:\/\/dailyausaf.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/5616-300x200.avif 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 564px) 100vw, 564px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A garment store is set ablaze in Dhaka, Bangladesh on August 4, 2024. Social media platforms Facebook and WhatsApp were not available, even via broadband connections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bangladesh authorities instructed the country\u2019s telecoms providers on Sunday to shut down 4G, effectively disabling internet services, according to a confidential government memo seen by Reuters.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Government orders<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cYou are requested to shut down all your 4G services until further notice, only 2G will be effective,\u201d said the document issued by the National Telecommunication Monitoring Center, a government intelligence agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Telecoms companies were previously told their <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">licenses<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> would be <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">canceled<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> if they did not comply with government orders, a person with direct knowledge told Reuters. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The telecom regulatory body did not respond to Reuters&#8217; calls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Last month, at least 150 people were killed and thousands injured in violence touched off by student groups protesting against quotas for government jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The protests paused after the Supreme Court scrapped most quotas, but students returned to the streets in sporadic protests last week, demanding justice for the families of those killed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I think the genie is out of the bottle and Hasina may not put it back in the bottle again,&#8221; said Shakil Ahmed, associate professor for government and politics at Jahangirnagar University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman on Saturday directed his officers to ensure the security of people&#8217;s lives, properties, and important state installations under all circumstances, a statement said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;(The) Bangladesh Army is a symbol of the people&#8217;s trust.
